The Devil’s Due (A Sherlock Holmes Adventure) 351 CZK Nové

After Art in the Blood and Unquiet Spirits, Holmes and Watson are back in the third of Bonnie MacBird’s critically acclaimed Sherlock Holmes Adventures, written in the tradition of Conan Doyle himself. It’s 1890 and the newly famous Sherlock Holmes faces his worst adversary to date – a diabolical villain bent on destroying some of London’s most admired public figures in particularly gruesome ways. A further puzzle is that suicide closely attends each of the murders. As he tracks the killer through vast and seething London, Holmes finds himself battling both an envious Scotland Yard and a critical press as he follows a complex trail from performers to princes, anarchists to aesthetes. But when his brother Mycroft disappears, apparently the victim of murder, even those loyal to Holmes begin to wonder how close to the flames he has travelled. Has Sherlock Holmes himself made a deal with the devil? Review ‘Loose-limbed, prodigiously inventive, plotted with infernal logic’ Kirkus Praise for Unquiet Spirits: ‘Brilliant, beguiling . . . delights both Sherlock Holmes aficionados and new fans of the genre.’Huffington Post ‘Haunting, vivid and beautifully plotted, an elegant tribute and a cunning update of everything we love about Sherlock Holmes and his world.’Daniel Stashower, author of Teller of Tales: The Life of Arthur Conan Doyle ‘If the original 60 Holmes stories aren’t enough for you, read Bonnie MacBird’s Unquiet Spirits for another dram of the Great Detective.’Leslie S. Klinger, editor of The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes ‘A superb Sherlockian adventure. Bonnie MacBird’s take on Holmes and Watson is inventive and true to the canon, a splendid blend of fast-paced action and detection.’Dana Cameron, author of the Emma Fielding Mysteries ‘A triumph of voice, place, and plotting. Highly recommended for fans of Sherlock.’Catriona McPherson, author of Dandy Gilver series ‘MacBird’s outstanding sequel to Art in the Blood melds a twisty, multi-layered plot with a plausible exploration of Sherlock Holmes’s life before Watson . . . Will make Sherlockians eager for more from her.’Publishers Weekly Starred Review ‘MacBird could possibly be Conan Doyle reincarnated. I hope this is a lengthy series. A perfect read as the nights draw in.’CrimeSquad.com ‘Ms MacBird does a fine job of re-creating the familiar Holmesian universe.’Wall Street Journal ‘A splendid read in the finest tradition of Conan Doyle.’Paul Annett, director of Granada Television’s Sherlock Holmes ‘Just start reading and you’ll be hooked . . . Suspense, excitement, intellectual stimulation – and humour: it’s all here.’Roger Johnson, Sherlock Holmes Journal ‘Bonnie MacBird gives us a rollicking tale worthy of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself.’Historical Novel Society ‘A tour de force.’Mystery Scene About the Author Bonnie MacBird was born and raised in San Francisco and fell in love with Sherlock Holmes by reading the canon at age ten.
